Finding the best tyres for your car

Having the right tyres for your car is very important, especially if you want to keep the fuel efficiency and performance of your vehicle up to speed.

Getting the right tyres however, can be a challenging task. It can be tricky to know right off the bat if a tyre has good grip, a long lifespan and whether it allows for a short stopping distance. Just talk to our team at Temby Auto Service and we will be happy to discuss your tyre needs.

To make your next tyre purchase easier, here are some tips to ensure your pick the perfect tyres that are suitable for your particular vehicle.

Consider which tyre category is the best

There are different types of tyres available on the market. Identifying what category your need will make it much easier during the shopping process. Below are some examples of the main tyre categories:

All weather tyres: These are top of the range tyres made to help your vehicle handle heavy winter conditions.

All season tyres: These are made for all types of weather conditions (including light winter conditions) because of their solid grip and long mileage.

Performance tyres for all seasons: These tyres have a great cornering grip and minimal wear so are great for cars that offer high speed and performance.

Ultra-high performance all season tyres: These are great for sedans but mainly sports cars as they come with fantastic traction and grip.

Get the right size tyres

It may seem obvious (but is easy to miss) that cars and tyre size go hand in hand especially if you want your car to perform at its peak. For smaller cars like a coupe or sedan your need smaller tyres than the standard. These tyres should have an increased width and a lower profile. For larger vehicles like an SUV your need larger sized tyres to ensure better traction and carrying capacity.

Get the best tread wear

The tread wear is a measure of how long it will take for a tyre to wear out. This makes it one of the most important things to consider when purchasing tyres if you want them to have a long lifespan. Uniform Tyre Quality Grading, or UTQG, is a standard for car tyres that measures the ideal amount of tread wear. It is a common perception that all-season tyres last longer than other types but it depends how you use your vehicle.

Rotate your tyres

If you aren't replacing all of your tyres it means you are engaging in tyre mixing. If this is the case, it is best to use the new tyres on the back of the car to prevent an unstable oversteer condition. If you just need to purchase one tyre then you should also put it on the back of the car with the tyre that has the greatest amount of tread remaining. Consider the vehicle manufacturer recommendation

Vehicle manufacturers provide a recommended type of tyre based on the size, weight, load capacity, off road capability and steering for your vehicle. This can usually be found on the side of the car's original tyres.

Finally, the best tyres will also be the ones that are not only suitable for your car but also within your budget.

Happy tyre shopping!
